Follow-up messages for consultants
A lead had a discovery call with you and then went silent. You don’t want to seem desperate, but you also don’t want to lose the work. Here are three messages that work for that exact situation — copy them, change the name, send.
After the discovery call
Good to speak, [Name]. Quick recap of what I heard: [problem], [constraint], [deadline]. If that's right I'll put together a scope this week. If I've misread anything, tell me now and I'll adjust before writing it.
Proposal in procurement limbo
Hi [Name] — I know these things move at their own pace. Is there anything I can send that makes the internal case easier? A one-pager, references, or a shorter pilot version that needs less sign-off?
Gone quiet for a month
Hi [Name] — closing the loop on this so it isn't sitting on either of our lists. Should I mark it as not going ahead for now? Genuinely no problem if so, and I'll check back next quarter if that's useful.
How long should a consultant wait before following up?
Faster than feels comfortable. Same-day after a call while the conversation is still fresh, then day 3, day 7, and a close-the-loop around day 14. Waiting two weeks to 'not seem pushy' is the single most common way consultants lose warm deals.
